The Swedish Road Administration Production (SRAP) has made sure it will have a better view of road conditions this winter. The snow plough vehicles in Lerum and Kungälv will be fitted with equipment that transmits information on where the ploughs spread grit and clear the roads from snow. This will allow the SRAP to have an accurate overview of the road conditions. Multicom Security has delivered the technology that will ensure that information from the vehicles is delivered in a safe and reliable manner. Assuming satisfactory rollout, the system will be implemented nationwide.

Multicom Security has together with Cartesia GIS, a provider of location-based technology solutions, delivered equipment to 17 snow ploughs in the municipality of Lerum. Furthermore, an additional five vehicles in Kungälv will be fitted with the equipment. Telematic equipment installed in the snow ploughs register the routes taken by the ploughs and action taken at each location. The system also registers whether there are obstacles on the road that makes it difficult or impossible to clear. This information is then sent to the SRA Server in Borlänge using the Mobiflex mobile data service provided by Multicom Security.

“By utilizing this technology we are able to quality assure our operations. We get an instant overview of the snow situation as well as an historic overview of where we have gritted and cleared the roads” says Bo Olofsgård, responsible for the project at SRAP.

“If for instance an accident happens due to slippery road conditions, we are able to see if the location of the accident had been cleared from snow or gritted. It makes the liability question much clearer” says Bo Olofsgård.

The plough vehicles are equipped with the GPS/GPRS module Probox from Cartesia. The Mobiflex service from Multicom Security ensures that the information is transmitted securely and reliably over the mobile phone network.

The security level is high and the system requires authentication to establish a connection. The data is protected using the mobile network´s own encryption technology as well as using an encrypted VPN-tunnel to reach the SRA systems. Traffic filtering that removes unwanted IP-traffic raises the security even further. Multicom Security monitors the service and its availability 24 by 7.

“Security is very important to us. We chose Multicom Security as our supplier since they can offer a solution that matches our high security requirements” says Bo Olofsgård.

“Mobiflex has been developed especially for companies and authorities with business critical applications for mobile data communications. We are pleased that our Mobiflex service meets the exacting needs of The Swedish Road Administration, thus contributing to making the roads safer for the public” says Andrew Carver, CEO Multicom Security AB.
