The power company Ringsjö Energi has equipped its operations centre with Mobitex – Multicom Security’s service for secure and reliable mobile data communications. To reduce downtime in their power distribution, Ringsjö Energi installed a Mobitex solution on four motor-driven actuators that are used to control the routing of power in the network. Being able to remotely control the routing rather than physically driving to the location reduces downtime for network disruptions and maintenance.

The solution is based on a Mobitex modem delivered by Radius, connected to Multicom’s wireless Mobitex service. The modem communicates with an actuator that is remotely controlled by the operations centre via Radius’ monitoring system. In case of a disruption in the power network, the wireless controlled actuator makes it easy to reroute electricity supplies without being on location.

Mobitex modems also have the advantage that they are easy to move to any location as required. This provides increased flexibility for Ringsjö Energi and makes the solution independent of the location of the actuators.

“Mobitex has been especially developed for companies and organisations with business critical mobile data applications. The system can be configured to meet varied communications or control requirements. We are pleased to see how well it suits the particular needs of Ringsjö Energi”, says Andrew Carver, CEO at Multicom Security AB.

Mobitex is used for various communications and M2M solutions including wireless monitoring and the control of devices such as electricity meters and process equipment. The Mobitex network provides extremely good coverage across approximately 92% of Sweden. Network availability is second to none, which makes Mobitex one of the most reliable and trusted systems available for mobile data communication in Sweden.

The Mobitex system utilises delivery confirmation and error detection to ensure delivery of data to the recipient. The system is built on a highly redundant design so if there should be an unexpected failure of part of the network, messages are automatically rerouted over another network path in order to ensure delivery.

Ringsjö Energi AB is a subsidiary within the Lunds Energi Group. Its core business is selling, producing and distributing power and providing district heating and communication networks.
