Multicom Security is launching Mobitex Combi, an addition to Multicom Security’s mobile data service which provides increased flexibility for companies using Mobitex today. Traditionally, Mobitex communication has been just for vehicle-based use, but now Mobitex Combi enables users to leave their vehicles whilst still retaining their connection with the Mobitex network, using a mobile phone or PDA. Furthermore Mobitex Combi provides extended network coverage outside of Sweden in most countries with GSM/GPRS-coverage.
Multicom Security’s Mobitex service has an established customer base with over 18,000 users in various industry sectors that include goods and personal transportation, technical and public service organisations, municipalities and public sector.
“Mobitex Combi is a valuable addition to every organisation using Mobitex for secure and reliable wireless data communications. Companies and organisations can be more responsive in the field while simultaneously taking advantage of the additional bandwidth now available by upgrading its Mobitex subscriptions to the Combi service” says Andrew Carver, CEO Multicom Security AB.
Mobitex Combi works over GPRS, EDGE and 3G. This service combines Mobitex’s superior coverage and robustness with the higher data transmission performance of GPRS and 3G networks.
Thanks to Mobitex Combi, the users will no longer be limited to using the fixed Mobitex equipment installed in their vehicles - moreover they may continue to communicate while indoors. One will be able, through a PDA to register, sign for receipt and report assignments to the central office when away from the vehicle.
The high bandwidth capabilty of GPRS networks’ also enables the utilisation of other mobile solutions in parallel with Mobitex such as map programs.
Mobitex Combi is particualrly beneficial for transportation companiers who can now stay in communication, transmitting assignments and receiving receipts when travelling outside of Sweden. Users can choose to communicate throught the vehicle’s Mobitex modem over Multicom’s Mobitex network or through their PDA via a local GPRS network. The system will recognise which network is being used and automatically choose the right communication path. The PDA can also be directly connected to the Mobitex modem in order to get the best possible coverage.
No modifications need to be made to the central host system or application software. All applications continue to function whether using the PDA or the vehicle’s Mobitex terminal. The service can easily be combined with peripheral equipment such as GPS-positioning with map program, data capture devices, RFID devices or printers.
